I DON’T HAVE A TEAM
On the weekend: a kid’s party
hiding around the barby with the other men
all the wives are tending to their kids
in silence or with friends
And now the dads are talking footy
or that Ashes thing
I stare into the flames and I think to myself
that I don’t have a team
When I was little, in Canberra,
playing soccer for the Melrose Stars
they’d run out of their socks in the store
Sydney Roosters were the closest ones
so they became my team in the Rugby League
But the blokes ‘round the barby really set the bar high
gotta have an Aussie Rules team too
I used to like Carlton when I was a kid
Alex Jesaulenko and Bruce Doull
they were cool so I followed the Blues
On the tv every weekend
there was VFL, Union and League
then I started playing in a rock and roll band
following footy quickly disappeared
Then the dad in the apron points the tongs at me
“Hey Mick, did your team make the top eight?”
I grab my plate and mumble in my beer
I don’t have a team
No, I jumped into the toddler pool and screamed
I don’t have a team
The results are on the news every hour, every day
But those numbers mean nothing to me
I won’t be sad on a Monday morning
’cause I don’t have a team
Don’t look good in my hometown green
